The Yellowstone The River is clear again.  We floated above Yankee Jim on 9/11 and it was gin.  The browns have started to run up there and were eating streamers.  We caught about 3 trout on hoppers, and several on rubber leg nymphs.  A bead head prince was a white fish magnet.  If you are fishing bead heads go small (size 18's or even smaller).  Still, I'd rather fish streamers on a sink tip.

The Madison The Upper Madison didn't fish very well yesterday.  I think it had more to do with the sun than anything.  A few big fish managed to make it in the net, but the bite seamed to be off in general.  The best fishing has been up by 3 dollar bridge on small rubber legs and bead heads.  Bring your caddis, and if you're lucky you may see some baetis on the water.  The lower has been slow.

The Spring Creeks  This time of year the creeks either fish on fire or they are very difficult - so pray for clouds.  If you are local, just wait for a dark nasty day and call for reservations.  Since the summer crowd is gone it is easier to get on.  Nymphs are working the best: miracle nymph, midge larva, pmd nymphs, scuds, even sculpin! For dries bring midges, PMD's, and Baetis patterns. Or try your favorite beetle...

Yellowstone National Park Grey and Green Drakes have been rocking fish in the Lamar Valley.  Slough Creek below the parking lot has had thick Grey Drake hatches, as well as the Lamar and Soda Butte.  Slough Creek's 2nd meadow has been fishing well with hoppers and ants still.  The Firehole is a fun spot for smaller fish, the Madison for bigger browns.

Local and Private Lakes   If you love lake fishing, now is the time to go! The cooler temperatures have brought the big guys back into the shallows where you can catch them on dries.  Callibaetis are working, as well as damsel dries.  Leeches and scuds are still deadly down deep, and of course a streamer will catch there interest...

The Bighorn  The Horn is fishing awesome still.  Haven't seen as many weeds as the week of 8/20.  Black caddis are still going, as well as size 20-22 baetis.  Tricos are still hatching on the lower (near Mallard's) in the morning.  We had awesome streamer fishing on the lower with white and black buggers... Still, you're highest concentration of 18" fish is 3 to B.

The Missouri  We're still waiting for the fall Baetis to turn on, but in the mean time try driving up to the MO on cloudy, colder days.  On these days bring a big rod for throwing streamers and a 4 weight along too for pseudos.  On bright days try fishing hoppers, ants, or other terrestrials.  These seem to work a whole lot better with an accurate cast, so don't be afraid to force feed some of these big fish.

Local Hot Spots   Places like these can't take a ton of fishing pressure, so we don't post these on line for everyone to read about.  For these places, it is best to come see us in person.  We'll give you a hand drawn map (so long as you agree to burn it).  We'll also check your fly box to see if you need anything special that's working.  Obviously, some places we all have to take to our graves!
