The Yellowstone Streamers are really starting to work well now. Unless you get some clouds, the best times to fish have been early morning and at dusk. The best baetis fishing of the day seems to be from 11:00 to 2:00 - so for the dry fly guys, there's no real rush to get on the water. Mid valley (the Bird float) probably had the best dry fly action this week. Pine to Carter's 9th street for nymphs, and below 89 for the streamers. Below Big Timber seams completely vacant if you want some elbow room.
The Madison The Madison in the Park has been red hot this week. Don't expect a slam dunk because these fish are not always in the mood to eat, but some true hogs have been caught and released - including this 26.5 incher that Tim Denholm is holding to the left! The Upper has been awesome, the lower a little slower, but big fish.
The Spring Creeks The creeks are switching to Winter rates on 10/15. For $40 bucks you can enjoy a great day of sight fishing a small creek for big fish! The hatches have been good, so bring your baetis and midges. The hatch has been starting around 10:00, but it is still nice to get on the water by 9:00 to stake your claim and fish the holes you've been waiting for...

Yellowstone National Park Now that the Madison is going full steam ahead, the Lamar Valley is almost vacant. Grey Drakes, baetis, and streamers are all working well on Soda Butte, the Lamar, and slough. Since these fish aren't seeing many flies, you'll be able to hook a lot of them. Further south, the browns are now in the famous channels and easy to get.
Local and Private Lakes Burns lake has been 100% on fire! Anglers are reporting catches of 50 or more fish a day, with several older fish in the 20-22 inch class. Sitz Ranch is experiencing a similar hot phase of fishing but will soon be closed due to rifle hunting. So... get out there soon while the big brookies and browns are going nuts for streamers! Bring your camera - you're going to need it!
The Bighorn Ahh... it's time to cast and blast! Pheasant season opens today (10/13) and the black caddis are STILL everywhere! Plus you've got Fall baetis scattering the water, so there's no excuse not to make the drive. George and some friends said they did very well yesterday - all on dries. They caught several fish over 20, but most fish in the 17" range. Plus streamer fishing down low!
The Missouri Baetis baby! The MO is really fishing well right now. George was up there last sunday and said word to fish streamers in the morning, and then switch to Baetis around 11:00. Clouds are nice, but the baetis are popping even on the bright days. If only this kind of unbeatable fishing could last like this all year... Watch out big brown trout - here we come!
Local Hot Spots Places like these can't take a ton of fishing pressure, so we don't post them on line. For these places, it is best to come see us in person (and be very polite). The reality is that if you are nice, we'll hook you up. We'll give you a map, (ask you to keep it to yourself), and sell you a few flies for the day. We've been on the road before too, and know how cool it is to get help from a fly shop.
