Paradise Valley Spring Creeks
The general trend on the creeks have been midges in the morning, baetis (clouds and weather pending) from 10:00 to 2:00 and midges again in the evening (after 5:00). For Nelson's and Armstrongs the miracle nymph has been working wonders, for DePuy's the copper bead black zebra midge. Also on the lower portion of DePuy's there have been a lot of caddis. Hogan's green caddis pupa, or one of Lafantain's sparkle pupa are working very well. You won't see many caddis above Dick's Pond, so for the upper section you should focus on midges and baetis. Sculpin patterns, spring creek leeches, scuds, mini san juan worms, and eggs are also good flies to have in your box...
Lower Madison
Here's a report that comes from Steve Wilson and the crew. They caught some nice browns on the lower last weekend... "We hit the lower Maddy on Sunday, the weather was absolutely beautiful. There were only a few boats heading down so we beat the Sunday crowd. We had a pretty good idea the fishing would be good since we caught a couple fish while waiting for our friends to shuttle the trailer. Then picked up several nice browns including the long brown I am holding in the photo below. I had just lost a 20 incher at my feet, a nice bow, and normally would leave the hole alone after disturbing a small piece of water with such a big fight. I cast in again anyway and at the head of the riffle and said to my buddy, "holly crap, this one is bigger than the last one!" You can see a hell of a tallon mark on this fish, it has been lucky. San Juans were the ticket I am not ashamed to say although a few fish fell to small emergers and bubble backs. Getting the nymphs deep fast was imortant as was a good presentation. The fish are spreading out and not just holding in the few deeper runs. There were some baites popping and some small midge clouds were sporradic. I didn't see any risers until the evening, it was probably too bright and sunny for the bugs. I did not see a single caddis.
