Fishing Restrictions The Yellowstone from Gardiner to the Stillwater is now officially open 24 hours.  You can have some outstanding dry fly fishing in the upper valley (Carbella to Pine), nymphs have been working well through town in the faster runs and riffles.  Despite cooler water temps, Yellowstone Park is still closed to fishing after 2:00 in most places.  It's hard to guess if they plan on lifting restrictions or not.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Yellowstone The 2:00 fishing restrictions have been lifted from Gardiner to the Stillwater!  The fish have been eating hoppers in the afternoon hard, so now that we can fish day, the hopper fishing should be best from 1:00 - 4:00.  Sometimes you'll get a hour or so break in the action, but when it turns on, it turns on big time!  For deadly droppers...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Madison  Flows have continued to rise and drop but the fishing in general has remained consistent.  If you happen to be on the river on one of the days they raise the flows you're out of luck.  Try to get an early or late start to miss the crowds.   A tan Fat Albert has been the hot top fly, or your favorite hopper.  Try a caddis dry dropper or rubber leg dropper.  Get a dead drift as fish have been picky...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Spring Creeks   We did a little bug collecting near Betty's riffle on Depuy's.  I would say 80% of what we found were dark olive PMD nymphs  (sizes 16-22) and long, light tan/olive midge larva (size 18-20).  The rest was a mix of beetles, scuds, sowbugs, caddis, and even a sculpin or two.  The sulfers don't seem as thick as they were two weeks ago.  That goes for the rusty and olive spinners too...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yellowstone National Park The Lamar Valley has been fishing well despite the recent thunderstorms.  The Lamar and Soda Butte have spiked up and are looking muddy, but should clear up by 8/8 (Wednesday).  If you want to fish after 2:00 try looking at Hellroaring Creek, the Yellowstone above 7 mile Hole, Pebble Creek, or the Lamar above Cache Creek...

Local and Private Lakes   Looking for a slam dunk? The private lakes in the area have been unbelievable! The callibaetis hatches are thinning down, but the damsels are dancing and hovering everywhere.   Leeches and scuds have been catching fish as well as a few big lake midge larva patterns. Give us a call to find out where to go

The Bighorn  The Bighorn is seeing the best dry fly fishing they've had in years!  Tie on a size #20 black CDC caddis and you've got the magic fly! The black caddis start around 1:00 and even though the hatch isn't thick until the afternoon, the fish are really start keying in on them early.  In the morning, fish are all over midges and midge emergers.  Get over there now!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Missouri  The MO has been fishing tough lately.  None of the reports that we've gotten this week have been good.  The tricos have been sparse, the pseudos have been less than plentiful, and the caddis are not worth staying late for.  Hoppers have been fooling fish here and there but most folks have been rolling up their sleeves and fishing with nymphs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Local Hot Spots   Unfortunately places like these can't take a ton of fishing pressure, so we don't want everyone reading about them on line.  For these places, perhaps it is best to come see us in person.  We can get you a hand drawn map (so long as you agree to burn it) and the flies that are working there. Obviously, some places we all have to take to our graves!
