The Baetis have popped!  Hundreds of noses were slurping small dries on the Yellowstone last Wednesday.  A parachute adams (even an over-sized 16) railed fish, but most fish were snacking on baetis emergers.  Don't expect a solid hatch everyday however, these bugs only hatch when the clouds are hovering and you're wearing fleece, like this weekend!

Plus... the Yellowstone streamer fishing is officially on!  If you like throwing big flies with big rods and a sink tip, the next 5 weeks should be your favorite time to float the Yellowstone.  Sculpin, Bow River Buggers, Zonkers, Black Lead Eye Buggers, JJ Special... take your pick and tie on some 0X tippet! If you're nymphing the Pat's rubber leg is still king for taking trout, bead heads if you don't mind catching whitefish.

We've been having better luck on streamers in the evening afterwork.  If you get blessed with a cloudy day, the streamer fishing should be good all day long.  If you are delt a hand with bright clouds, it would be better to stick with nymphs under an indicator until the evening.  We've found that after 5:00PM the light is softer and the fish are more interested in chasing down your favorite streamer pattern.  If you get one, send us a photo for our big fish 2007 page!

It's time for a new Streamer Rod!

Now would be a great time to look into an 8 weight streamer rod for the yellowstone.  If you're not quite sure which rod is right for you, please check out our 8 weight shoot out.  In this review you'll find at least a few rods that you'll want to go and cast.  We carry many of the rods tested here at the shop, so don't be shy - come on by and cast your favorite picks and see how the rods feel with your casting stroke.  Everyone is different, so don't worry if you like a rod that wasn't our favorite.  For the Yellowstone, my favorite streamer rod is the G.Loomis Native Run 9'#8 weight 4pc.  Try it, you'll like it!
