Our hotel, the Bel Air, in downtown BA was superb. With Argentine Peso at three to one with the American dollar, a room that would have set us back a couple of hundred dollars in the Big Apple seemed like a ridiculous bargain at seventy-five.
After a couple of hours of shut-eye, our journey took us through the heart of downtown Buenos Aires. There's nothing like changing into shorts and a t-shirt on December 2nd. We strolled towards the Galleria Pacifico, a feast of small shops that will delight even the most seasoned hard core shopper. The aroma of richly finished leather tempts shoppers to inspect the handbags and luggage that Argentina is famous for. After stalking up on fresh cuban cigars, (specifically Monte Cristo No. 2's and 4's), we found an enjoyable street corner cafe for appetizers and an afternoon smoke. Later a cab ride took us to the waterfront, and one of BA’s most famous restaurants, Las Lilas, where we would have a chance to confirm Argentina’s reputation for aged, grass fed beef that we washed down with fine Malbec red wine from the Mendoza region.
