Lower Madison

Salmonflies are on the Lower right now.  Photo: Eric Paulson

6.20 Big Bugs are coming off on the Lower Madison right now. Visibility is only about a foot, so nymphing has been a lot better than the dry fly fishing.  Try a variety of big Rubberlegs, streamers, crayfish, and small beadhead nymphs.

6.6  In general, brighter days have tougher with more emphasis on sight nymphing, particularly with midge larva, scuds, sawyer style pt's...  The recent rain however has brought the baetis back and we've been seeing good numbers of baetis and pseudos.  This week looks like overcast and rain, so get out there while the hatches are coming off!

6.1  The creeks continue to fish well and will be one of the few places to fish with clear water.  Had our first reports of PMD's on Nelson's yesterday so it looks like it is now time to start loading up on Pale Morning Dun patterns and less on Baetis.  Midges will still be going on, so be sure to bring plenty of size 18 & 20 midge pupa and larva patterns.

The first PMD’s of the season to appear are the largest – the Ephemerella Infrequens, which are imitated with duns that average size 16 but often look as large as 14’s. René Harrop’s PMD No-Hackle in a size 16 with a big gray wing silhouette and pale olive body is a perfect imitation.  We also got some new René Harrop PMD nymphs which look especially delicious and will be something new for fish to look at this year.

Local and Private Lakes

Right now is one the best times to go for a big fish on one of the private lakes we fish.  Burn's has been fishing very well lately, with callibaetis hatches in the afternoons once things warm up.  Higher elevation lakes have yet to see callibaetis, but have been fishing well with leeches, scuds, damsel nymphs, chironomids, snails, and other lake flies.

Often this time of year you'll have the opportunity to sight fish to cruisers along the edges, or to risers when the callibaetis are popping.  If you are interested in booking a day on a private lake give us a call!  406-222-7130.

Other Rivers

While the Yellowstone is out, we're fishing other rivers in the area like the Madison, Missouri, Big Hole, and Bighorn.  Seems like high water is a bit of a pattern state wide this year, but if you are keen to the conditions there are some fish to be caught out there.  Give us a call for specifics on where you can find some action!  406-222-7130.

The Missouri has been nymphing well.  Long leaders, hot beads, scuds, worms, streamers.   The dearborn and Prickly Pear are muddy but getting better each day, which will relieve some of the pressure from the dam to the wolf creek bridge.

The Bighorn has been running high but nymphing well.  Worms, worms, worms.  Plan on saving at least $5 from your trip so you can blast your the bottom of your boat out.

The Beaverhead has been nymphing well up high.  George fished over here last weekend and crushed them on size 18 Brassies.  Expect to see some crowds below the dam and perhaps even a fist fight or two.

The Henry's Fork is starting to fish really well now.  Not the normal small dry fly fishing you'd expect, but really good nymphing. More like fishing a freestone. Rubberlegs, worms and 2x were in order.

   Yellowstone River

6.7  The yellowstone is muddy and unfishable again... the recent rain will keep things in check this week, but next week we should see some more snow come out of the hills...

6.4  The Yellowstone is still below 10,000 CFS but very little vis and worth fishing.  With hot days ahead, the Stone is just now firing her engines for take off...

6.1  Who would have guessed the Yellowstone is actually fishable  in June!  Flows on Wednesday were under 7,000 CFS but are sure to bump up as warmer weather arrives later this week.  We've seen a few boats on the water the past two days but with mixed reports.  Below town is muddy from the Shield's still, so if you want to try pounding the banks with streamers the Valley to town is your best shot.

5.31  Fished at lunch and afterwork the past couple days but no chasers.  Despite a muddy Billman creek (comes in at the Lumber Yard), the clarity in town was about 6-8 inches - certainly enough for a big brown to see your streamer. Drove down to Springdale and the river only had about an inch of visibility...
