Fishing Restrictions  Since several rivers and streams in our area are now experiencing "Hoot Owl" closures, (restrictions that limit fishing from 2:00 PM to Midnight), we have changed our shop hours to 6:00am to 6:00pm.  The Yellowstone water temperatures have been below 70 degrees lately, so FWP will likely revoke the Hoot Owl restrictions by next week.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Yellowstone There is some mud on the way, but today the vis at 9th street was the normal 3-4 feet.  The Lamar did have a blip on the CFS chart, but it was not a major spike like last week.  Check out the Yellowstone Webcam near the Devil's slide for an updated photo every two minutes.  The good side is that the water temps have been below 70 degrees lately...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Madison  Flows have continued to rise and drop but the fishing in general has remained consistent.  If you happen to be on the river on one of the days they raise the flows you're out of luck.  Try to get an early or late start to miss the crowds.   A tan Fat Albert has been the hot top fly, or your favorite hopper.  Try a caddis dry dropper or rubber leg dropper.  Get a dead drift as fish have been picky...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Spring Creeks   Dave Student's tan sparkle scud has been the hot lead fly in the morning before the PMD's get going.  Our #1 combo has been a René Harrop Olive Short Wing Emerger, with one of Dave Student's olive midge larva droppers.  A Rusty or Olive spinner has been dominating the evening fishing (if the wind doesn't blow) and if it does, switch to a small sculpin pattern and go for the big one.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yellowstone National Park The Lamar Valley has been fishing well despite the recent thunderstorms.  The Lamar and Soda Butte have spiked up and are looking muddy, but should clear up by 8/8 (Wednesday).  If you want to fish after 2:00 try looking at Hellroaring Creek, the Yellowstone above 7 mile Hole, Pebble Creek, or the Lamar above Cache Creek...

Local and Private Lakes   Looking for a slam dunk? The private lakes in the area have been unbelievable! The callibaetis hatches are thinning down, but the damsels are dancing and hovering everywhere.   Leeches and scuds have been catching fish as well as a few big lake midge larva patterns. Give us a call to find out where to go

The Bighorn  The Bighorn is seeing the best dry fly fishing they've had in years!  Tie on a size #20 black CDC caddis and you've got the magic fly! The black caddis start around 1:00 and even though the hatch isn't thick until the afternoon, the fish are really start keying in on them early.  In the morning, fish are all over midges and midge emergers.  Get over there now!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Missouri  The MO has been fishing tough lately.  None of the reports that we've gotten this week have been good.  The tricos have been sparse, the pseudos have been less than plentiful, and the caddis are not worth staying late for.  Hoppers have been fooling fish here and there but most folks have been rolling up their sleeves and fishing with nymphs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Local Hot Spots   Unfortunately places like these can't take a ton of fishing pressure, so we don't want everyone reading about them on line.  For these places, perhaps it is best to come see us in person.  We can get you a hand drawn map (so long as you agree to burn it) and the flies that are working there. Obviously, some places we all have to take to our graves!
