   Yellowstone River

1.11.11

As you can see, the river is completely frozen over above Mallard's Rest.  Further down stream, especially through town where the water speed picks up slightly there has been open water to fish since our winter began.  Usually you'll see slush ice or wind, but every now and then there are good windows of opportunity.  Keep a close eye on the weather and if you think you see a good day, give us a call for a wind report...

1.5.11

Too windy for midges lately but that's the main food source if you are trying to match the hatch.  Forget about stripping streamers, if you're an addict then go with a black dead drifted sculpin and get deep - no one's chasing when it's this cold so you're going to have to bump them on the nose. We always like fishing a serendipity dropper like the $3 dip this time of year.  Bring your gloves - you'll need 'em!

Livingston Spring Creeks

1.11.11

The creeks are definitely one of the best places to dip your feet in moving water right now.  Baetis are pretty much over although we did see one the other day - a big ole' 16-17. Midges have been thicker, and on calmer cloudy days you'll see some heads.  Streamers will work out here since the water temp is 52, but the fish are more sluggish, so take it easy on your retrieve to give them a chance.

During the winter season, a 4-6 fish day is a good day on the creeks, even for an expert angler.  The biggest thing is just getting out there and enjoying some of the best spring creeks in the world, and very likely have them all to yourselves...
