The Yellowstone | Spring Creeks | Waters we fish | Guide Services

  CFS @ Lamar River |   CFS @ Corwin Springs  |  CFS @ Carter's

11/29

Once again, the weather is looking picture perfect this morning.  There's no wind, (knock on wood) it's relatively warm out, (Hi of 45°F), and there are plenty of fish to be caught.  If you're headed for the river, through town has been fishing well.  There's quite a few springs from Carter's to Mayor's Landing that the fish tend to concentrate around.  If you're floating later in the afternoon make sure to bring some midge dries. If you're on more of a morning mission start with a couple nymphs under an indicator.  There are still baetis nymphs out as well as midge larva. Concentrate on slower, deep water - especially where you find warmer water coming in.  If you're not sure where these spots are, stop by and we can highlight a few holes for you.

11/28

Looks like a nice day to fish. NOAA is calling for 14 - 22 mph of wind today, but so far there has been none.  If you have the day and don't like the idea of going shopping with the Mrs., come on over and fish the creeks.

Nothing better than a slice of pecan pie and watching the game.

Happy Thanksgiving!  Doug and Derek headed over to Bear Trap today. They made a pit stop at Sitz Ranch to see if things were already frozen... and they were.  Doug thought that it was probably about an inch thick.  The Bear trap fished well for them, nothing big, but lots of them.  They were hanging out in the slower water, about 2-3 feet of water. What were they eating?  Anything small...

11/26

We've had a few mixed reports lately.  We talked to some clients who fished Armstrong's on Monday and did the best they have ever done.  They were using eggs for a lead fly and dropping off small black zebra midges and thin, dark grey baetis nymphs.  They said they caught around 50 fish.  One of the top guides in the area went to Armstrong's on Tuesday but had a very though day.  They saw lots of fish, (some hogs too) but couldn't get them to eat very well.  I would suspect that the fish were a little sore in the mouth from the day before. With that in mind, give the creeks a call and see how many people have been fishing.  If you can find a window where there have been little or no pressure on the creeks, go ahead and book it!  Rods are $40 from now until April 14th.

11/24

Yesterday and today turned out to be quite pleasant.  Wind wasn't too bad and the air temp was in the 50's.  Looks like it will be getting cooler through Thanksgiving, with 20 -30 % chance of snow.  Tomorrow (Tues) looks like your best day to fish if you can.

11/22

Wind Advisory for Saturday 11/22:  West southwest wind 36 to 39 mph with gusts up to 55 in town and up to 40 in Paradise Valley.

It was cold enough last night for ice to develop along the Yellowstone's banks this morning.  The water temp didn't feel much better; after flipping over a few rocks in search of bugs, my hands were cold enough to call it quits.  There were still a few baetis nymphs clinging on, and I found a diving beetle larva, but midges were the most abundant food source for sure.

11/21

Not a good day to have off... The wind is absolutely brutal this morning.  Match that with a Hazardous Weather Outlook and it's back to bed, set the coffee maker for 10:00, and tie some flies.  Things look more promising for the weekend however with temperatures rising to the high 40's and winds decreasing to as low as 8 mph.

In today's Bozeman Chronicle there was an interesting article, "Legends of the Fall" by Ben Pierce.  Bryan caught the monster brown on October 28th with a Bennett's Stone - more commonly referred to as a Pat's rubber legs.  Try to pick up today's paper, otherwise you can read more about it on Bryan's Blog...

11/19

Things in Livingston have turned a little chilly lately with a High around 37°F today and a low of 26°F and a 70% chance of snow tonight.  The wind hasn't exactly been on our side either, but that hasn't stopped a few die hards from coming in and gearing up to fish the river.  Streamers and nymphs have been the most popular flies, but on calmer evenings you can catch a decent midge hatch.

11/15

Early morning fishing before work has been slow to say the least. I think it's safe to say that waiting until the water heats up is a good idea, whether your fishing the river, the spring creeks, or private lakes.  The fish get more active and are more willing to chase down your streamer, or move off their lie to eat your nymph.

11/10

Enjoying a sunny day above Emigrant bridge and the islands is a great way to spend the afternoon wade fishing.  Streamers are still working, but on brighter days you'll probably have the best success with smaller nymphs.  Save the bugger barn for those "socked in" days with warmer cloud cover and dull light.

Caught this little guy on accident while fishing for bonefish on the north side of St. John, near the old Annaberg sugar mill.  They had some beautiful flats out there with turtle grass, sandy holes, and nice drop offs.  We didn't see any bones that day, (must not have been the right tide), but we did see a big spotted eagle ray, a small shark, a nice cuda, and a bunch of hawksbill sea turtles.

Now is the time to still catch some nice fish on streamers...

Fishing has been good on the Yellowstone, little bit of everything still going on and hardly anyone is fishing right now.  Look for the best fishing to be in the warmest part part of the day.  With cooler water temps try slowing everything down for streamers, dead drifting can be excellent as well. Baetis and midges are getting some good fish up in the foam and slower water, particularly in town.

Here is a photo of a very large sculpin for your fly tying reference.

Cloud cover and rain showers could make for some great fishing this weekend on the Yellowstone and other waters like the Spring creeks, as well as many others.  We should get some good Baetis hatches on the creeks as well as the river.  The streamer fishing could and should be hot this weekend with the cloud cover.  Save your honey do's for another day, fishing should be great this weekend!
