Fly Fishing Adventures: Montana by John Holt

!

When we first got word that John Holt would be writing a book about lesser-explored waters of Montana our hearts sunk. First thoughts ranged from “oh great, there goes all the waters we used to have to ourselves”, “now were going to have to share our secret waters with all of the tourists”, and “this must be a joke”. We were nearly in tears at the mere thought of such a book. But I was a bit more skeptical of this John Holt character in general and his new book in particular. After thoroughly analyzing his Montana fly fishing “Bibles” over the past several years, The Montana Fly fishing Guides East and West, I knew this guy was no scam. I didn’t figure him to be a character to let his secrets go out easily. And so it is with this new book by Holt. He discusses some out of the way places that I really suspect few fly fisherman from out of the area will venture. A trip to a place like the mouth of the Musselshell River in northeast Montana is not for the faint of heart, trust me. If you decide to make that trip be sure to bring at least two spare tires and a large supply of drinking water. The large brown trout Holt writes of on the Marias River will not give themselves up easily, and it is quite a haul from any of our trout fishing Mecca’s for the average person to go and get skunked. Holt does a wonderful job of getting the reader involved in the adventure of each tale and has a knack for really describing the character of the environment and state of mind of the author at the particular time. This is certainly a great read but don’t pick up this title hoping to find that secret spot to catch your Montana brown trout of a lifetime, you will come away disappointed. If however, you want an entertaining read of stories describing the real Montana fishing experience, some history of the areas detailed, and entertaining fish filled tales of the Treasure state this book is for you.

Montanas Best Fly Fishing By Ben Romans

!

Ben Romans new title is similar in nature to a lot of other guides to Montana written over the years. Romans portrays Montana in an accurate way and gives up to date advice on fishing conditions and some obstacles to avoid on the major waterways of Montana. Great information from top-notch locals and guides, including photos and advice from our own James Anderson, is what you will find in this latest edition of fly fishing guides to Montana. All of our favorite rivers are covered in this book, from the Bighorn to the Kootenai. You will find chapters on 18 of the most popular and productive rivers in the state. Wonderful photos depicting each of these fisheries accompany each chapter. A great shot of our own Doug Mcknight holding a large Yellowstone brown trout even appears on page 22. Don’t expect this book to reinvent the wheel, but you will definitely find lots of up to date and accurate information in here.

Fly Fishing For Sharks By Richard Louv

!

This book has been out for about ten years but I suspect few of our newest fly anglers are aware of this title. No, this is not the experts guide to taking sharks on fly rods, however there is an entertaining chapter with adventure angler Conway Bowman about that very subject. Richard Louv set out on a journey across America to meet everyday anglers, tell their stories, and experience a few days in the life of these individuals. This book is one mans expedition to the heart of American angling. This book is as much about the people Mr. Louv encounters along the way as it is about his fishing experiences. In one chapter he travels deep into the San Diego County Mountains in search of what many biologists believe to be the purest strain of Rainbow Trout in the world, the strain that all other Rainbow Trout evolved from. Other explorations include getting instruction on fly casting from Joan Wulff, meeting Patrick Hemingway in Montana, fishing a professional bass tournament on Lake Erie, and several other tales from throughout the country. Don’t be fooled by the title, this book in my eyes is the best piece of angling literature of the past 10 years, if not longer. If you haven’t read of Richard Louv’s adventures yet do yourself a favor, pick up the phone, and order a copy from us. It may be the best book you have ever laid eyes upon, a definite classic.

Return To Travers Corners by Scott Waldie

!

Travers Corners is a fictional town located somewhere in the middle of Montana. The residents of this quaint village normally live simple, uneventful lives and this is just the way they like it. Small town America at it’s best. The novel follows locals Jud, maker of fine wooden dories that are desired all over the country, and Henry a local low key cowboy who fishes as much as possible, commonly with his best friend Jud. But all is not always so calm and nonchalant in the place the citizens of town have dubbed “the place where not much has happened since Herbert Hoover stopped for gas.” Travers Corners entertains some interesting visitors in this novel. Imaginary people like a fellow named David C. Belson, a small and despicable character with more money than god, shows up to terrorize the local spring creek that the townsfolk have grown to cherish. Things didn’t turn out so well for Mr. Belson, but you will have to read this fine compilation of short stories to find out his fate. This book is as charming as any novel you will find based on fly fishing and it truly is hard to put down once you really get into the intricate lives of the folks of Travers Corners.

Learning From The Water by Rene Harrop

!

Rene Harrop is known for his intricately tied flies that imitate very precise insects of the greater Yellowstone region. For years he has been tying these exacting specimens, but little has ever been written about the techniques that he employs on his home waters. In Learning from the Water we are clued into some of the strategies this master uses to fool the large picky trout of this area. Rene writes of topics such as leader lengths, presentation angles, and specific advanced fly casts that help him to fool these wary trout. Rene is certainly one of the foremost experts on spring creek style fishing and this book really lets the rest of the world in on the expertise that 56 years on the water has taught him. The flies he has tied are as amazing as ever with many patterns of his that I have not personally seen before. All of the major hatches are covered here including terrestrials and midges. Pictures in this book are precise and crisp and this title is very professionally put together. We highly recommend this book for anyone who really appreciates the fishing in the greater Yellowstone area and you will most certainly come away learning a lot from Rene. This is a collector’s edition, signed by Rene Harrop himself.

A Passion for Steelhead by Dec Hogan

!
Larger picture
Dec Hogan has fashioned a masterpiece on all of the aspects of Steelhead on the fly.
Based on what Dec learned in 20 years as a steelheader, 15 years of which he guided nearly 200 hundred days a year. It's classic flyfishing for steelhead from A-Z as he saw, lived and taught it. There is something for everyone. From the rank novice to the most seasoned of veteran. Dec covers basic techniques proven on 1000s of steelhead, selecting the best fly for various river conditions, choosing the right tackle for you, effectively covering different water types, learning to spey cast, practical strategies for finding productive streams. 336 pgs.

No other game fish stirs the passion of the dedicated steelhead fly fisher as does this big sea-run rainbow—whether rising to intercept a dry fly skated across a September tailout on a high-desert canyon river in Oregon, or taking a deeply swinging wet fly on a swollen springtime river in coastal British Columbia. From his longtime base on Washington State's legendary Skagit River, highly regarded steelhead guide and fly fisher Dec Hogan has done and seen it all. Now he brings together a lifetime of solid steelheading experience to write a book which, if not the last word on the subject, is destined to be an instant classic. A Passion for Steelhead will cover all the basic techniques proven on thousands upon thousands of steelhead successfully hooked, selecting the best fly for various river conditions, choosing the right tackle for you, effectively covering different water types, learning to spey cast, practical strategies for finding productive streams by the season, and a fascinating and highly original look at how steelhead take (or refuse) a fly, based on the author's personal observations of more than 1,000 summer-run steelhead movements during nine intense seasons. The book will be filled with the author's own impressive color photography and illustrated with many beautiful pencil sketches of two-handed casting and steelhead taking the fly.
