Thill Strike Indicator

Shop and Guide Favorite!  Try these and you'll love them.

These high-tech indicators are actually ice fishing floats but we have found that they make the best big water indicators we've found. They are made with balsa wood and painted with a very durable, dual color plastic.  They make fantastic indicators because they are extremely buoyant but also aerodynamic. If you have been upset with the way wind-resistant yarn indicators cast, you'll love these!    Like to dead drift streamers?  The largest size (#4) will float a size 2 lead eye bugger like a size #16 Bead Head Prince!    Our favorite sizes are the #3 for larger, heavier flies and split shot and the #2 for smaller nymphs.

Rather than using the toothpick peg, we prefer a different method.  First, double over your leader (usually 3 - 6 feet above your first fly) and slip the loop through the middle of the indicator. You may have to kink the leader or butt section with your teeth or forceps to get it started through the indicator.  Remember that the end you insert the loop into is the color you'll see on the water so experiment to see if you can see one fluorescent color more easily than the other.  Next, take the tippet end of your leader (or flies if they are already tied on) and pull it/them back through the loop.   This keeps the indicator in place so it won't slide on your leader while casting.  If you want to re-position the indicator, simply slack up the line that goes around the indicator and move it!  As a general rule, start out putting this indicator 2-4 feet above your split shot and nymphs.

These are easily re-usable and a few will last you all season.

Fish Pimp Indicators

The Name Says It All!

Using the standard "slit and rubber band" style, these indicators are easy to put on, take off, or adjust.  They are 30% lighter than other foam indicators making them easier to cast.  Their aerodynamic, football-shape also helps with casting into the wind.  Fish Pimps are reusable and come in a handy case convenient for streamside use.

Fishing slower waters like the Missouri, Bighorn, or spring creeks?  Try Fish Pimp Mini's for a stealthier approach! These tiny indicators land softly and spook fewer fish.

Yarn Indicators

(Sold in packs of 4)

Ultra high visibility yarn makes this indicator easy to see.  Outfitters and guides love to fish nymphs under yarn indicators  because their clients can see it, but also because these indicators work great with big mends.  You can throw a huge "jump rope" like mend into your drifting line, and the indicator hardly moves or gets sucked underwater..  This is good news, since you want your nymphs to look as natural as possible - if you can move your line without moving your flies, you are ahead of the game.   Squeeze a generous amount of gink (or equivalent floatant) on these in the morning and watch them float all day!

These are large indicators, but don't be afraid to cut them down to smaller sizes.

These are also sold individually for $1.95 each

Rio Kahuna LT Indicator

As aerodynamic as it gets!

This indicator material comes from Rio's high floating lines!  These indicators are perfect for spring creeks or anywhere larger indicators spook trout.   Close your eyes while casting and you would never know this indicator is there!  Some of the creators at Rio like to use the "dotted line" technique, where they put 3-4 indicators on in a row, each about a foot away from each other.  They say this helps them detect a strike the split second a fish takes your fly!

We've found the best way to get this indicator off Rio's mono core and onto your leader is with a perfection loop.  Cut off about 4 inches of the Kahuna and tie the smallest perfection loop you can with the mono.  Then, simply put your tippet up through the perfection loop, cut whatever size indicator off you want, and pull in over the perfection loop onto your leader.  (*Note:  this technique does not work well with hand tied or knotted leaders).

Roll On Indicator

Umpqua Pre-cut sticker indicators

Pre-cut in different sized squares, these indicators are a favorite for spring creek anglers.   Since these are stick-on indicators, they are extremely easy to roll on.   This is the best "quick and easy" solution when big fish are spooked by larger pinch-on indicators.   You can also cut these down in size if a

tiny indicator is needed.

Palsa Pinch On Indicator

The ultimate easy to see strike sticker!

For $1.95, these indicators are a no-brainer!  They are easy to see, easy to put on, and easy to take off.  The sticker adhesive will last all day long, yet will scrape off as soon as you wish to start dry fly fishing.  For spring creeks and slow moving water, the white indicators look like foam and will spook less fish, although from our experience, even the bright green and hi-vis orange don't spook the fish on the Paradise Valley spring creeks.

Two sheets of stickers per pack (24 indicators in total)
