George Anderson's Yellowstone Angler Newsletter Early Summer Edition
June 2005

Dear Fellow Angler,

We are happy to present the Early Summer Edition of the Yellowstone Angler Newsletter! Summer means many things to us. For one, it is a chance to see some familiar faces return to the area. We are also looking forward to what summer brings in the way of fishing. Within a week there should be salmonflies coming off somewhere close-by. Not too long after that, we will be floating the river with big hoppers tempting even the biggest trout to the surface. We hope that you get as excited about summer as we do. Perhaps you will have a chance to spend a few days in our area with one of our guides or exploring on your own. Regardless of you summer plans, we wish you the best and hope the fish gods are good to you this summer.

If you would like to continue to receive this newsletter in the future, please add news@yellowstoneangler.com to your address book. This will help the newsletter get through any filters you may have on your computer. It will also make it easier for you to notify us if you change your email address.

We hope you enjoy reading our newsletter. We are always excited to hear what you think!

Sincerely,

George, Jason, and James

Lack of significant moisture early this winter raised concerns for many planning a summer trip to Yellowstone Country. Many of us watched closely as the winter turned into spring and brought much needed snow and rain over the last few months. The last week has brought so much rain that concerns have switched focus to flooding in some areas of the state. Nearly all of our rivers and streams are flowing high with water. This recent moisture has eased concerns over the low snowpack we saw early in the winter. For the first time in several years, Montana reservoirs are reaching full capacity and this rain is expected to continue through the week. Although we haven't broken the long term drought, things are shaping up for a great fishing season in Montana.

Although the recent moisture has eased concerns about extremely low water and forest fires, we are still expecting rivers and streams to reach moderately low levels as the summer progresses. This isn't necessarily a bad thing for anglers considering a trip this summer. Low water years have their own advantages to consider.

In a typical, non-drought, year, we would probably see spring runoff continue through June and possibly into early July. During a low water year, we get out on the local streams and rivers like the Yellowstone River earlier. This early clearing of the water gives us a better shot at fishing the Yellowstone's salmonfly hatch, which we might not be able to do during a high water year. This is a treat that many Montana anglers are looking forward to this season. The best way to hit this hatch on the Yellowstone is by planning a float trip in late June through early July.

Dry conditions can also prime the pump for an outstanding hopper year. Too much moisture can reduce the number of hoppers that will hatch in the spring. We all know what good hopper numbers mean to mid and late summer fishing on rivers like the Yellowstone. If you haven't had the chance to fish hoppers on the Yellowstone, this would be a great year to give it a try. The best hopper fishing is typically late July through mid-September. If the fall is mild, this outstanding fishing can last well into October.

There is another advantage of a low water year that most people don't think of. Many people will be scared off by reports of low water in Montana. Informed anglers benefit from the reduced crowds and are able to take advantage of the solitude and fish that haven't been pounded by anglers all day long. We found ourselves grinning last summer at the outstanding fishing, often without another angler in sight.

Fishing can often be exceptionally good during a low-water year. Setting up a guided trip can be a great way to experience some of Montana's finest fishing. We still have some prime dates available with some of the fine outfitters and guides that we proudly represent. Whether you are interested in floating the world famous Yellowstone River, a trip to Yellowstone Park, or a day on one of the private spring creeks in the area, give us a call soon so we can help you plan a vacation to remember.

2005 Mother's Day Caddis Hatch Report

    By James Anderson

It was the most impressive fishing week of my life. I didn't say productive: The most productive fishing I've ever experienced was in Argentina last December, (yes there are still a few spots left for this year, hint hint). And I didn't say awesome: the most awesome fishing I've had was with my Dad, fishing for tarpon in Florida. But it was the most impressive. If you've never had the chance to witness this baronial batch of bug carpets floating down the river, you need to come out and enjoy mother nature at her best. There's nothing like being covered head to toe with crawling caddis like a bee keeper harvesting honey while a monster brown takes your size #14 Goddard (and backing) rapidly downstream...

In our last newsletter we had our first annual photo contest. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to send in their shots. It was hard to pick out a winner as they were all really good pictures. Keep up the good work!

We realize having your photo and story on a newsletter isn't as glamorous as a brand new Boron II, but it's still kind of cool. Right? Right?! Maybe next year we can come up with some better prizes. Still, we would like to say congratulations to 10 year old Lucas for catching this 2 pound Brookie at Buckingham Lake this spring! If you are wondering, manager Jason Elkins was just there to pose for pictures. Way to go Lucas!

Even if you didn't win this year, you can still tell your friends to check you out on our photo gallery. Surely they'll think you're the bomb!
