George's Comments:

Although the 9 foot 8-weight BVK is one of our favorite rods, the smaller line size rods like the 5 and 6-weights have not proven to be nearly as good. This rod is just so heavy in swing weight that it is an arm breaker if you are doing a lot of casting.  This 6-weight BVK has a much slower action than the 8-weight BVK, and this is one reason it does not perform as well.  All this swing weight and relatively stiff tip killed the shorter distance performance.  At short distance it was the worst rod in the Shootout, and at mid to long range it fared only slightly better.

The rod is a pleasing dark olive green, with lighter green wraps.  The handle is a western style grip with decent cork.  TFO uses a double ring uplock seat with a green graphite insert to complement the blank.  The locking rings on the reel seat are very small and difficult to tighten.  TFO needs to use larger rings with a coarser knurl pattern, similar to what Scott uses on their rods.  The guides are two SiC strippers and the rest hard chrome snake guides with a hook keeper.

One last gripe is the lack of a hard case like all the other manufacturers provide.  These are available if you want one but the cost is an extra $30.00.  TFO does also make a triangular travel case that will take up to 5 rods in their cloth bags for $49.95

George’s casting notes:    The perfect line -  S.A. MPX in WF-6-F

Performance at 30 feet:  17 points out of 20

The extremely heavy swing weight does not allow for any feel and with the stiffer tip, the accuracy was not good either.

Performance at 50 feet:  18 points out of 20

The weight still hurts, but at least now it tracks pretty well and is reasonably accurate.

Performance at 75 feet:  18 points out of 20

The power is there to cast long but I’m working especially hard and casting this rod all day would be a workout.

James' Comments:

Yes, for me the TFO BVK finished in last place.  But you know what?  This rod still gets it done!  The BVK, although very heavy in hand is still a great nymph fishing rod, especially when windy conditions arise or when you need to use a lot of weight to get down deeper more quickly.  They are great for beginners because they have a very wide sweet spot and are more forgiving than more responsive, less stiff rods where beginners often throw tailing loops and tangles.

My considered opinion is that the Fenwick Aetos is better and $70 cheaper, so if your local fly shop has that in stock I would pull the trigger on that instead.  The Base is $170 cheaper, but isn’t quite as stiff/good in the wind.  The Pro4X is $100 more, but is much lighter and more fun to cast.

Performance at 30 feet:  17 points out of 20

Wow. I had never noticed how heavy this rod feels until we compared it with everything else.  Only a few other rods that we didn’t include in the test felt heavier in hand.  While this rod doesn’t feel good, I have to admit it is fairly accurate.

Performance at 50 feet:  18 points out of 20

The BVK starts to settle into itself at 50 feet.  The extra weight is still noticeable when compared to the better rods, but its reserve power is impressive, especially for a $260 rod.

Performance at 75 feet:  18.5 points out of 20

Again I’m impressed by this rod’s raw power to cast confidently in the wind as well as to 75 feet and beyond.  The major complaint here is the heavier weight (both overall weight and swing weight).  You can cast this rod a long way but be sure to throw a bottle of Advil into your Bugger Beast.

Logan's Comments:

The TFO BVK rounded out the sixteen rods tested.  The BVK is a rod I’ve always liked.  Nothing you don’t need and backed by one of the best warranties in the game.  This is a go to “guide-rod” for many of our guides and I can see why.  It gives you what you need, nothing more, nothing less.

Logan’s Casting Notes:

Performance at 30 feet: 16 points out of 20

The overall stiffness of the BVK hurt its performance scores at 30 feet.  It was too inconsistent for me and I didn’t hit the plate very often.

Performance at 50 feet: 18 points out of 20

The BVK was doing much better at 50 feet.  I was able to accurately hit the plate and when I was off it was easy to pick it up and correct my mistakes.

Performance at 75 feet: 17 points out of 20

The BVK was like many of the inexpensive rods.  Great at 50 feet but not so good at 75 feet.  But it got it done.

JG's Comments:

I was honestly a little let down by the BVK in the 6wt.  This is the first time I’ve cast the BVK in this line size, owning a BVK in an 8wt (which is really good) it had a high bar to meet in my mind.  Unfortunately because of the weight and lack of feel it didn't do too well in my eyes.  It would probably make a great streamer rod for someone wanting to streamer fish with a 6.

30 Feet:    16 points out of 20

The rod is much too stiff here to get any feedback from your cast.  Accuracy is a function of hand-eye coordination more so than casting ability.  You don't get much sense of the rod loading or unloading and the weight is very apparent.

50 Feet:   16 points out of 20

At this distance the BVK fared a little better.  There was enough line out to load the rod sufficiently to get a decent cast going.  It was still overly stiff and the weight became tiring quickly.  Because of the super fast action and heavy weight I found it hard to get consistent accuracy from the rod.

75 Feet:  18 points out of 20

This was probably my favorite distance for casting the BVK.  Because it’s got so much power it really wants to reach out to the farther targets.  It creates a lot of line speed, which will help with windy conditions.  You do get some sense of feel with a lot of line out and can get reasonable accuracy.  The weight still takes a few points from it but overall not too bad here.
