While Sage feels the ONE is their flagship “all-around” rod for precision casting accuracy over a wide range of conditions, we feel it is actually more of a specialized rod for people who are looking for more power, carrying lots of line in the air, tight loops at long distance, sinking lines, heavier flies, and tournament casting. The 5 weight version is exceptionally accurate but not nearly as delicate as an all around 5 weight should be. Our favorite models for the ONE are the 6 - 9 weights, which are very light yet have a ton of power to sling split shot, two meaty nymphs, streamers, big indicators, big salmonfly dries, and sinking lines. Another impressive "cherry picker" out of the ONE's line up is the 8'6"#4, which is much different from the rest of the rods in the line up. The 8'6"#4 is still a very fast rod, but it has a softer tip which allows the rod to deliver much sweeter and more delicate presentations than the heavier weight rods. Our favorite is the 6 weight, matched with a GPX although we know several people who love the 9 weight for both saltwater or steelhead. If you liked the serious punch-action of Sage's old XP, then you will love this rod!
