Salmonflies also above the canyon...
Little brownie caught on a size #12 elk hair

Salmonflies are now above Yankee Jim Canyon.  Fish are typically smaller up here, so if you are looking for one or two big fish this is not your best bet.   If you are looking for lots of eats on dries and don’t mind 8-12 inch cutthroat, rainbows, whitefish, and browns this can be a fun section.  Plan on working hard on the oars, this is definitely not novice rowing water.  Try fishing tight to the willows, in the shade, close to the logs, in the middle when boulders a present.  They liked both a long dead drift as well as a skittering swing.  Small dry droppers were also a good way to offer a treat to an already stonefly nymph gorged fish.  Good visibility up high, but the Shield’s spiked, making below 89 a tough option.  Today there was about 6-8 inches of visilbity down there and slow, even with streamers.  No spikes in the park waters yet, the fishing should be really good up high the next few days.  Try fishing caddis, trudes, and sallies in town.  Probably streamers and big nymphs only down low for a day or two…
