The weather forecast is calling for wind, cold, and snow this week. Although most of the boat ramps are free from shelf ice, there is bound to be snow drifts out and about, with a good chance of getting stuck. Wade fishing is going to be a better option, focusing on the warmest part of the day (usually 1:00 – 4:00 in the afternoon).
CFS is around 1100, meaning the Yellowstone currently offers a lot of good wade fishing – if you can put up with elements. The good news is we are getting a lot of well needed snow which is helping at to our snowpack. If the wind calms down there has been some good midge fishing. For dries try a hanging midge or midge cluster. If you are fishing subsurface a red serendipity or zebra midge have been working. Streamers are another good tactic but remember to slow down your retrieve as the water is cold (and in some places even slushy).
