The T&T Avantt II 8'6"#3 is our #1 pick for fishing tailwaters or larger rivers where more power is often an asset for handling wind, longer casts, and larger trout. Our entire staff marveled at how well this rod casts, particularly how well the energy is transferred through the rod smoothly and crisply. Although it lacked a bit of feel at 20 feet, it was still especially accurate. At 25-40 feet it was extremely fun to cast and one of the bigger surprises of our 3-weight Shootout. Unlike other 3-weights, when the wind picks up, you won't have to put this rod away!

If you look at the T&T Avantt II's rod deflection, it becomes clear where its impressive power stems from.  We like how the tip is a little softer than the Winston Air 2, (and the mid-section has a little more backbone). This design gives the Avantt II excellent power but also a touch more feel at closer distances, or when protecting 6X tippet. 

We matched the Thomas & Thomas Avantt II with our favorite inexpensive 3-weight reel, the Orvis Battenkill Click II. This reel is fully machined and utilizes a click a pawl drag. The classic style fits well on a 3-weight fly rod. You might target larger fish with this rod, but we all felt an experienced angler will have the skills to palm the reel effectively, adding extra pressure when needed to land a larger fish.
