Paradise Valley Spring Creek Fishing Report

Early morning glass at DePuy's
Ephemerella Infrequens, (the larger size #14-16 PMD), have finally started to emerge! While still lighter in numbers, there are certainly enough to get the fish looking. The emergence usually starts around 10:30 and lasts until around 2:00. Spinner falls are much later in the evening. The only tricky part is we have some wind in the forecast this week, anywhere from 5 to 40 mph. 😬
If you don't see much activity on the surface nymphing with sow bugs, scuds, and midge larva has been effective. Once you start seeing PMD dries you can switch to a dry dropper, with a PMD emerger pattern. Once you start to see a lot of dries you might cut off your dropper and go with a single PMD dry.
Fishing with 6 or 6.5X has been the best, which means bring along a softer 5 weight, or if you have one, or even better bring a 3-weight or 4-weight fly rod.
Other handy items to bring along:
- A 3 or 4-weight fly rod (better for delicate presentations and tippet protection)
- A net (easier on the fish)
- 12 foot 6 leader (a good base leader)
- 5-7X tippet (use 5 if you can, 6.5X if you need it, 7 if you dare)
- Floatant (Gink, Aquel, dry magic)
- Powdered desiccant (Frog's Fanny, Dry Shake)
- SPF chapstick (good for the sun and your knots)
Most the rainbows done spawning, but still be careful where you tread and try to avoid walking on the redds.
