Yellowstone National Park fishing report

While the general fishing season remains closed, certain sections on the Gardner and Madison rivers remain open to fishing in the Park year round.
Starting this year, the season opener for the Firehole, Gibbon, and entire Madison has been moved up to May 1st.
The main season opener is Saturday, May 23rd.
We sell Park Licenses at the shop, or you may also purchase a YNP fishing license online.
Keep an eye on the CFS chart for the Gardner. It seems to be rounded out but could go up again with temps in the high 60's. It will likely fish best on the drop, but the Gardner doesn't get as muddy as the Lamar or other streams in the park.
With the various hot springs located in the Gardner river, there have been decent midge hatches during the middle of the day. These typically get going around 11:00AM and continue into the early afternoon slowing down by about 2:00PM. There have also been some micro black caddis, but the fish are still primarily feeding on midges. With temps in the 70's this week there may even be some baetis hatching.
Nymph fishing or throwing a small streamer can also be productive before or after the midge hatch is going. (A rubberleg or Euro nymph followed by a zebra midge is a great combo). For midge dries, choose any size #18-22 that you can see, (preferably with some white or hi-vis in it).
Larger fish can be found on the lower section of the Madison. The section that remains open year round is from the Barns Holes down to the HWY 191 bridge (near Hebgen Lake). This section is fun to swing small streamers for resident fish as well as potential lake fish that have come up.
