Yellowstone National Park Fishing Report

A Madison baetis eater from opening day... Photo: Joe Sherman
The Firehole, Gibbon, and Madison are now open! The Gardner river is also open to fishing below Osprey Falls, (as it is year-round). The main season opener is still Memorial day weekend, this year being Saturday, May 23rd. We sell Park Licenses at the shop, or you may also purchase a YNP fishing license online here.
You'll want to keep an eye on the CFS chart for the Gardner. For now it doesn't look good, with a similar steady, "runoff" rise to the Lamar and Soda Butte. Perhaps you could try a dark or flashy streamer right on the edge of the bank, but for all practical purposes its time to head to the west side of the park instead.
*Note much of the Firehole in now closed due to the May 4th bear incident. Midway Geyser Basis in still open, but much of the Firehole remains closed.
The Firehole, Gibbon, and Madison will remain relatively clear and will be a good place to fish during the Park's early season. The opener was quite a bit busier than we expected, especially on the Firehole! No PMD sightings yet, but there are still quite a few baetis on the water and some fish up eating dries. The fish have been a little on the picky side, so be sure to bring a few beatis dries and emerger patterns to seal the deal.
Depending on the weather, we expect to see PMD's and Miller Caddis soon...
