Finally we’ve had a break from the 55 mph winds! Last Friday and Saturday turned in the best reports of the week, (low hanging clouds and virtually no wind). People have been catching fish on everything from tiny midge dries, spring baetis (size 20’s), rubber legs and beadheads, to dead drifted streamer patterns. The river is still a touch off color, but definitely “green is good.” If you plan on swinging or stripping streamers, olive has been the ticket. Plan on seeing a lot more boats from now until runoff – spring fever has arrived! On Sunday there were so many rigs at Carter’s that people were parking on the other side of the bridge. Pine Creek had 20 rigs, Mallard Rest (despite the “controlled burn” fire) had 15 rigs, Pig Farm had 10 rigs, Springdale 5 rigs. Water temps are now in the low 40’s, the streamer bite will get better as we get into mid 40’s by mid to late April. For now your best bet is still nymphing, but bring along a dry fly rod as we have seen some rising fish here and there. Keep an eye on the weather, if the Yellowstone is bright it might not be worth spending a kitchen pass or gas…
