Joe Sherman about to release a mid-morning cutthroat on Soda Butte.

As of today, (Friday July 26th), Yellowstone National Park has issued additional fishing hoot-owl closures on some of the rivers in the NE section of the park. This means that anglers must quit fishing at 2:00PM on the following rivers and streams:

  • Lamar River downstream of Cache Creek to its confluence with the Yellowstone River.
  • Soda Butte Creek (the entire creek).
  • Slough Creek (the entire creek).
  • Yellowstone River from Tower Junction north to the park boundary.
  • Gardner River downstream of Osprey Falls north to the park boundary.
  • Snake River from Forest Creek south to the park boundary.

In addition to these hoot-owls, the following rivers (which are heavily influenced by geothermal features have full closures on them currently:

  • Madison River and all associated tributaries.
  • Firehole River and all associated tributaries.
  • Gibbon River and all associated tributaries downstream of Norris Campground.

To beat the heat, we suggest getting an early start when heading into the park regardless of your destination. As always, do your best to land fish quickly and do not play fish to exhaustion. Your cooperation will help protect the Park’s fisheries.

There is plenty of water in the NE section of the Park that is not on hoot-owl restrictions. Also, there are no hoot-owl restrictions on the Yellowstone River outside of Yellowstone National Park. Give us a call for a report or to book at trip: 1-406-222-7130.
