As of yesterday the Yellowstone is back! We’ve seen good numbers of Salmon fly adults, Golden Stones and the Caddis have been nearly as thick as mother’s day caddis! The bulk of the bugs will be found between 26 and Loch Leven accesses for the next day or so. By the weekend Carbella down will be busy with boats. You can always fish rubber leg nymphs above the canyon as well, or fish big dries behind the hatch where the fish are less “gorged.” There will also be good caddis fishing through out the entire Valley. Our guides have been putting up a lot of numbers (20+ trout per boat) along with some quality fish in the 18-20 inch range, many on dries or rubber leg nymphs. If you can make it out for an early season guide trip the next two weeks will be difficult to beat! If you’re getting out on your own keep in mind that the river is still flowing high and can be dangerous in spots for inexperienced oarsmen, especially from Pine Creek down past Big Timber where currents are tricky and the wave trains are larger. Yankee Jim is floatable now, but scouting each section is a must. Our best flies have been a mix between Chubbies, Lawson’s Golden, Hi-Viz Caddis, Chocolate Goddard Caddis, Rubber legs, and big Prince nymphs.
