The winter of 2015 has been an interesting one to say the least. Decemeber and early Janurary brought a few big snow storms that have basically supplied the majority of this year’s snow pack. Snowpack levels back then were around 117 to 108% (snow water equivalent to total precipitation). Surprisingly, levels are still report 114 to 108% for the upper yellowstone river basin. Thanks to the early snow storms most of Montana’s snow pack levels are at or over 100%, however the local feeling for skiers and anglers alike is that a little more snow is needed. March and April often contribute a lot towards Montana’s snow pack figures. That being said if we don’t get a lot more snow early to mid July is looking like a good time book the Yellowstone, with late July and early August being the next best time period to be out here in 2015. “June-uary” had several days in the 50’s and even a few days approaching the 60 degree mark. February has had several days over 50 already which is crazy. Unfortunately for the Yellowstone, a lot of those 50 degree days also included gusts of wind over 50 m.p.h. While the fishing on the yellowstone has been free of ice, honestly it has been no where close to as consistent as the spring creeks or tailgaters. If you really want to put some fish in the net, consider paying $40 to fish one of the spring creeks or heading to the MO. If you want a chance at a big brown, the Yellowstone is always an option but plan on putting your time in, the big one is not easy to come by…
