Yellowstone is back

Finally, after 4 days of thick mud the Yellowstone is back to that classic, “Green is Good” tint, (at least between Gardiner and Mid Valley).  Expect that same clarity of water to be below town by tomorrow.  Savvy anglers know what that means… Also good news, it looks like the Lamar is back to clear…

Open Options

The Yellowstone is still muddy and recovering from both a slide on the Gardiner as well as a slide from the Yellowstone itself.  The river is clearing above Yankee Jim and should be fishable tomorrow, and as long as we don’t get more rain up in the park the next two nights, we’ll be good…

Mud Slide

The Yellowstone currently has a rather large mud plug from Gardiner to Livingston right now.  Sounds like yesterday’s hard morning rain created a mud slide on the Gardner River.  We’ve also heard that the Larmar got a little muddy as well, despite the fact that their CFS flows didn’t spike very much.  Check out the…

Yellowstone fishing well

If you are looking to float the Yellowstone and fish with big salmonfly dries, the next couple days will be your last chance.  Most of the bugs have headed into the Park, however there are still a few “stragglers” holding behind between Gardiner and Joe Brown.  The fish in this section are smaller in general,…

Spring Creek Report by Bob Bergquist

DePuy’s is back with a vengeance. Lots of bugs, lots of fish and some real pigs eating with dainty manners (pinky fin out)… until hooked!  Recent days on DePuy’s feature massive clouds of PMD spinners at first light from end to end, dropping onto the water as early as 7AM. Guides have been arriving to…

Bugs (and boats) at Carbella

Needless to say the Yellowstone has been fishing very well lately.  Most of the action (and boat traffic) has been above emigrant chasing the salmonfly hatch.   Big bugs have now been spotted as high as Gardiner down to Loch now, with the bulk of the bugs staged up in the willows below Carbella.  Getting…

Callibaetis Hatch

As if Salmonflies and PMD’s weren’t enough, there’s also some serious Callibaetis hatches coming off on local and private ponds.  Plan on fish looking up for dries as early as 9:00 – 9:30, and depending on wind and weather lasting until about 2:00 PM.  A few of our favorite patterns include callibaetis cripples, callibaetis biot…

Madison -vs- Yellowstone?

Wow.  The salmonfly hatch is absolutely epic this year.  The Yellowstone is now on fire, but at the same time the Upper Madison continues to kick out big brown after big brown… Where to go is actually a tough decision right now!  Just a few more tid bits of information and then you make the…

Stonefly action continues…

We had a couple calls asking us about yesterday’s spike on the Yellowstone.  No need to worry, it was a small bump and the clarity has already returned up high.  It’s a feeding frenzy over here, with a true Smörgåsbord of fish food.  It seems like the bigger fish want the larger stonefly dries, while…
