Caddis have popped, clarity now an issue

We’re now seeing thousands of caddis here in town and below, unfortunately the river is now about 8-12 inches of visibility and border line worth it (definitely worth it if you just want cool bug photos).  With temps in the high 70’s the next couple days the river will likely get even dirtier, leaving little…

Seeing a Couple Caddis…

Had a few boats out on the river yesterday and we’re starting to see some caddis dries, (not many – 20?)  and no fish up eating them yet, but at least it’s a start!  Looks like 70 degree days through Wednesday, so that might help the “pop.”  We’ve had enough lower elevation snow melt already…

April fishing picking up in Montana

Seems like state wide there has been a change in the fishing conditions, and thankfully a change for the better!  March Browns have arrived, while baetis and midges are plentiful as well.  We’ve even seen skwalas on the Yellowstone, as well as other rivers you would not guess to see them on.  Soon we’ll start…

Bring your 8 weight…

Clarity on the Yellowstone is perfect right now for throwing big uglies.  The brown above fell for one of Gallop’s Butt Monkey streamers.  300 grain sink tip lines on an 8 weight rod are a great way to go right now, especially if you like to throw a couple streamers.  Otherwise, try dead drifting a…

Yellowstone Clearing Up

First off, a big THANK YOU to everyone who got out yesterday morning and helped with the river clean up!  Looks like we got over 10,000 lbs of scrap metal, tires, broken glass, and trash out of the river and on it’s way to recycling – great job guys!  Check out the  news video… As…

Yellowstone Angler April Fishing Update

The mild spring weather we are having has brought the water temperatures up enough to create excellent spring hatches of both blue winged olives and midges a few weeks ahead of schedule.  Blue Winged Olive hatches are now present on the Yellowstone, Bighorn and Paradise Valley Spring Creeks.  Wind has been the only deterrent to…

Spring baetis have arrived

Little surprise, the Yellowstone continues to be as fickle as ever.  Cloudy and calm are the days we all hope for, bright and windy are usually the cards we get dealt.  The one change we’ve seen lately has been a lot more baetis on the water, even on sunny days.  Be sure to bring some…

Weather change

Finally we’ve had a break from the 55 mph winds!  Last Friday and Saturday turned in the best reports of the week, (low hanging clouds and virtually no wind).  People have been catching fish on everything from tiny midge dries, spring baetis (size 20’s), rubber legs and beadheads, to dead drifted streamer patterns.  The river…

Stone remains tough fishing

The Yellowstone has always been a fickle river, but the last 2 weeks have been ridiculous!  It’s hard to put a finger on exactly what’s to blame… the changing weather, the barometer, high winds, increased fishing pressure, less water clarity due to low elevation snow melt, (the list of excuses goes on)…  Maybe the hog…
